Doing it now because it's probably the only day I'll have time.

Anyway, beneath the cut are some supposedly snarky commentaries on the episodes "Supply Lines" (aka "The Return of Cham Syndulla and Jar Jar Binks!") and "Sphere of Influence" (of which I honestly have no idea what the plot is yet!).

Here there be spoilers. )

Give me any character, and I'll tell you ten things about them from my personal canon.

Okay I lied. It did turn into a meta. )

Anakin in Vietnam

Saturday, February 7th, 2009 06:57 pm
fialleril: [the things they carried] (Chopper)
Actually Anakin has very little to do with this post, but I'm playing off of the book title Achilles in Vietnam (which is a book everyone should read, btw).

I've been convinced for a while that the Clone Wars are basically the GFFA equivalent of America's war in Vietnam. With everything that entails. No matter how much the Jedi like to preach about how they fight for the freedom of the galaxy's people, the viewer and many of the characters know this isn't a "good war." (It isn't really about freedom either, or the Jedi might have made at least a peep about the problem of rampant slavery on Tatooine when they made their deal with Jabba. But I digress.) It's a war about stopping the spread of communism the Separatist Movement. And not much else.

This week's episode of Clone Wars showcased that really well. And for once, I have more good than bad to say about the episode!

here there be spoilers! )

Guys, I am upset and annoyed about the portrayal of so-called "pacifists" in the latest Clone Wars episode, and I will probably make a post ranting about it soon. BUT. [livejournal.com profile] polly_moopers is a mind reader, and she just wrote me the most amazing fic.

About Jar Jar leading a non-violent revolution.

YOU SHOULD ALL GO READ IT.
fialleril: [a bit like The Idiot, only written by someone much less talented than Dostoevsky] (Jar Jar Binks)
The contest at [livejournal.com profile] swicontest this week is the scene from the beginning of AOTC where everybody meets up again in Padmé's apartment. AND there are pics of Jar Jar. And it reminded me of how much I love him in that episode.

It also filled me with a sudden and inexplicable longing to read Jar Jar and Anakin friendship fics. Or Jar Jar and Padmé friendship fics. (I would say Jar Jar and Obi-Wan, but he doesn't seem to like Jar Jar very much. But possibly a fic where he suddenly realizes that Jar Jar is kind of awesome?)

BUT THE INTERNET FAILS ME. WHY NO FIC, INTARWEBS?

Translation: Someone write me Jar Jar friendship fic, plz?

Gungan Venus?

Lilah - Gungan Jedi - Coloured
by ~StuCunningham on deviantART

Okay, so Palo's Gungan Venus isn't a Jedi (and she's a nude), but still. This Gungan is just beautiful. I felt she deserved to be seen by more of the world. The rest of StuCunningham's work is pretty excellent, as well - especially his Gungans. Check it out!

A huge thanks and lots of hugs to [livejournal.com profile] starfoozle! I just got your Christmas gift today, and I love it so much. The music is pretty great, and I really love your Jar Jar drawing. (And you said it wasn't very good!)

Mesa wishin alla yousa a merry Christmas!

I'm finally back in the land of the living, but it was a near thing for a while. I managed to come down with a flue during dead week and finals week, the same time when everything was due. But I turned in my last final on Tuesday (German translation - UGH!), had the AAR holiday party that afternoon, and then hopped a plane to Springfield on Wednesday. So now I'm writing this from my sister's dorm room computer. We're headed home tomorrow.

But I'm sure no one is interested in any of that, so let's talk fandom things! On Wednesday night [livejournal.com profile] veriond and I finally got caught up on the Clone Wars episodes.

I'm preparing to do a meta on the subject of Jar Jar Binks, but first, a little research. ;)

Note: I will probably not be replying to comments, because I want to remain neutral for the purposes of research. ;) But please feel free to comment all the same: I will take responses into account!
fialleril: [my eyes are yours; they are not blue, but they're wide open] (martyr Kitster)
Had to do this one, because some of the results were two hilarious/perfect to pass up. :) And I really didn't look ahead, either.

List twelve characters without looking at the questions. Then answer the questions by replacing the corresponding number with the character.

I decided to stay in one fandom, because I'm boring like that. ;)

1.
Barriss
2. Anakin/Vader
3. Luke
4. Beru
5. Padmé
6. Jar Jar
7. Leia
8. Kitster
9. Shmi
10. Palpatine
11. Watto
12. Shaak Ti

Beneath the cut, 78 Star Wars icons that have no real overarching theme, although experimental cropping (no whole faces need apply!) and T.S. Eliot do appear frequently.

As always, please comment, credit, and don't hotlink. :) Also, textless icons are not bases! Thanks.

Here, at long last, is my response to the following challenge from [livejournal.com profile] jedi_em:

Take any line you please from any book you please and then write a story/drabble that includes said line somewhere in it. The only "rules" are that the piece must be a minimum of 600 words and you must post it the first time unedited, just as you wrote it.

I chose the line "There is a way to be good again," from The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. (Which is, by the way, one of the best books I've ever read. I highly recommend it.) And my mind being what it is, I immediately thought of Palpatine, and Jar Jar Binks.

Amazingly, Kitster Banai does not appear in this story. Authorities are still looking into the matter.

So, here is the first, unedited posting. I wrote over a period of several days in fits and spurts, so I apologize if it's a bit jumpy. But then, it is unedited.

Title: Pesach
Characters: Mireus Palpatine, Jar Jar Binks, mention of Anakin, Luke and Leia Skywalker
Timeframe: AU, intertrilogy-ish timeframe
Genre: Introspection? Interpersonal drama?
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1111
Summary: Anakin was not his son, of course. But he could have been, and that, in the end, was what made Mireus Palpatine break.

Jar Jar Binks is probably the last person he had ever expected to see here, and yet somehow, it fits )
fialleril: [Na-Ekkreth the trickster] (Anakin)
My Muse is crazy. And also, apparently, addicted to tea. But that doesn't really surprise me.

I've been reading a lot lately about postcolonial theory, revolutions, modern day slavery, and fair trade. And all of that's been distilling in the Muse's little moonshine still.

So, in the interests of sharing, and also in order to keep a log for myself, here's a few of the crazy plot bunnies that have been invading my brain lately:

Star Wars
  • An AU featuring social activist!Anakin. Because the only thing that Yoda and I agree on is that Anakin probably never should have been a Jedi. In this universe, Anakin's experience of slavery as a child affected him a lot more than it apparently did in canon, and he dedicates his life to ending slavery—in all its forms.
  • Another AU in which Yoda is the Grand Master of a theocratic regime ruling the galaxy, Palpatine is the last of the Jedi, and Anakin and Kitster start the Revolution. This one is entirely the fault of [personal profile] leia_naberrie (who, by the way, needs to come back. Leia, we miss you!)
  • The answer to one of [profile] jedi_em's challenges, using the line "There is a way to be good again" from The Kite Runner. All I'm saying is that it will involve Palpatine, Jar Jar Binks, and the Skywalker twins. :)
  • How Luke met Tamrin (his future wife in my EU-free universe). In Dex's Diner. :D
Avatar
  • Future!fic (i.e., after the war) in which Zuko decides that this whole Fire Lord thing isn't really working out, and he'd much rather be serving tea. Mai thinks that would be much less boring than palace life, anyway. And the Fire Nation has a democratic revolution.
Original stories
  • Five Weeks with Alyosha Karamazov [This title just popped into my head one day and it will not leave me alone. I think that this story would be about a young woman whose grandfather is dying. He asks her to read The Brothers Karamazov to him during her hospital visits.]
  • Something that I'm calling "scifi Beowulf," though that isn't quite accurate. [There is a wall around the city. The humans are inside, the monsters without. Or is it the other way around?]
fialleril: [a bit like The Idiot, only written by someone much less talented than Dostoevsky] (Jar Jar Binks)
[livejournal.com profile] swficchallenge is back up and running! So I wrote this for the new challenge. My first ever attempt at writing TPM, or Jar Jar that matter. But I have a feeling I may be seeing more of him. He's rather growing on me...

Title: Pathetic Lifeforms
Challenge: #35, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." - Eleanor Roosevelt
Characters: Obi-Wan, Anakin, Jar Jar, Qui-Gon, Padmé
Timeframe: mid-TPM, on the return flight to Naboo
Rating: G
Word Count: 921
Summary: Obi-Wan feels slighted, Anakin is lonely, and Jar Jar knows how to be a friend. A rather different take on the challenge quote.

Read it here.
fialleril: [This is the nature of war: it turns us into enemies.] (remember)
Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I'll give you either (or several of the following) (a) three facts about them from my personal canon/fanon, (b) a reason he/she sucks, (c) a reason he/she is awesomecakes, (d) five things that never happened to that character or (e) five people that character never fell in love with and why.
