fialleril: [my unabating Malfoy problem] (Malfoys)
But I am too lazy to write an actual My Thoughts On Harry Potter post tonight. And anyway you can probably guess most of them because I am very predictable with my thoughts and tastes. As only one example, if you wonder about my thoughts on Dumbledore, they are virtually identical to my thoughts on Yoda.

So instead, please enjoy this list of books that would have been infinitely more interesting than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:

under a cut 'cause I get a little long-winded )

On an entirely different note, I am debating whether I should make an actual HP tag, or just stick with "my ongoing Malfoy problem," since that seems likely to be the gist of it, anyway.

fialleril: [my favorite shapeshifting genderqueer trickster] (Loki)
Loki is the Snape to Balder's Dumbledore.

Think about it. Everybody knows Ragnarok is coming, and when it comes, all of the elder generation of male gods are going to die. The only ones who survive Ragnarok are a) exiles (Hoenir), b) children (Magni, Modi, Vidar), or c) already dead (Balder, Hodur).

So Balder dies well before Ragnarok, misses out on the battle and blood and death and all-consuming fire, and comes back to life just in time to find the world reborn, a blank slate just waiting to be ordered afresh, and himself the heir apparent of the gods, with basically no one to challenge him for the status of chief god.

And he'd be a good ruler, too. Unlike Odin, he's renowned for his justice and fairness as well as his wisdom. If Loki is the sort of trickster who wants to balance the scales by burning everything to the ground and starting over, Balder is definitely the guy to start over with. But in order to ensure he'll be around to start everything over, he has to die first. Loki is both the person who ensures that Balder dies, and the person who ensures that he stays dead - that is, stays in Hel, where he is safe from Ragnarok and in place to take the field once the world is reborn.

Surely someone has written this, internet? Don't tell me I'm going to have to write it myself!
fialleril: [someday perhaps I will write that AU about warrior!Sif and fosteredJotunPrince!Loki] (Sif/Loki)
Or, what movie!Odin would have done if he were not a colossal tool, and instead actually interested in peace and coexistence rather than colonization.

Spoilers for the Thor movie, although really it's more like spoilers for what doesn't happen. Still, here is a cut just in case.

fialleril: [I confess that I have lived my life] (Gaila)
Well the Star Wars showing was apparently a great success. Crystal and Lea are both fans now. :D And, even better, Crystal has no idea about the big secret that comes out in ESB. We're going to watch that one on Saturday, and I'm awaiting her reaction like a kid at Christmas.

See, back in the day my dad actually spoiled the whole thing for me before I ever saw the movies, so it was never a surprise. I've always kind of wanted to see someone react cold to the "big reveal," and it seems I will finally get my chance. :D

She's actually seen the new Trek movie, though, so a great deal of hilarity ensued when the Death Star was introduced and then Alderaan was destroyed, and she was like, "Wait, what? Is this deja vu?"

Speaking of Trek, gonna see it again tonight with Lea.

And also, I have this idea. Let me share it with you.

So [ profile] trisfic has already written the definitive fic about Kirk and Uhura becoming BFFs. I figure she's the one woman who's completely uninterested in him, but whom he still very much respects and likes, and once he realizes that fact, she'll probably be his first ever female friend. And, okay, I admit I have a weakness for opposite gender friendship fic.

So it occurred to me that there should really be a similar thing for Gaila and Spock. I mean, think about it. Would they not make the greatest BFFs? She would be always accusing him of being sexually repressed, and he would be always refuting her with something logical, until she catches him making out with Uhura in the turbolift, after which point denying the facts becomes illogical. And they would get together and talk about how ridiculous humans can be, and inevitably these conversations would devolve into discussing ways to prank Kirk. And then Gaila would start an organization for the non-human members of the crew, which Spock would think was frivolous, so Uhura and Gaila would have to hatch a plot to make him show up to the meetings. And Gaila would be always telling Spock ribald stories to see if she could get a rise out of him, but when that gets boring they'd spend hours talking about complex equations, which would end up becoming a conversation about humans and their propensity to the ridiculous, Captain Kirk in particular. And someone write me this fic, please, or I may have to write it myself.
fialleril: [tzai and fine literature] (Kitster)
The Hypothetical AU Meme: Take any one of the fandoms you know I write in (or think I should), and give me a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU, superhero AU, Ancient Rome AU, cop AU, etc). I will then explain what story from your chosen fandom I would write for your chosen type of AU.

Please bear in mind that I do not promise to ever actually write said AU!
fialleril: [will you bear this storm?] (Shmi)
So I have three papers due this week, plus a final exam, plus my thesis revisions due by next Wednesday, so you know what that means.

The plotbunnies pick now to invade.

So. Some of you already know about the pirates universe. Then there's what's affectionately known as revolutionary universe. Well, damn it all, now there's another one. Yes, another massive, chapter-length Star Wars prequel AU that I will probably never actually find time to write. But that won't stop it from consuming my muse, I'm sure.

I blame [ profile] sunnyskywalker's revolutionary!Shmi fic for the germ of this idea. It started with the vague idea that Shmi would make a pretty awesome Tatooine version of Harriet Tubman. It started there.

And it continues under this cut... )
fialleril: [Na-Ekkreth the trickster] (Anakin)
My Muse is crazy. And also, apparently, addicted to tea. But that doesn't really surprise me.

I've been reading a lot lately about postcolonial theory, revolutions, modern day slavery, and fair trade. And all of that's been distilling in the Muse's little moonshine still.

So, in the interests of sharing, and also in order to keep a log for myself, here's a few of the crazy plot bunnies that have been invading my brain lately:

Star Wars
  • An AU featuring social activist!Anakin. Because the only thing that Yoda and I agree on is that Anakin probably never should have been a Jedi. In this universe, Anakin's experience of slavery as a child affected him a lot more than it apparently did in canon, and he dedicates his life to ending slavery—in all its forms.
  • Another AU in which Yoda is the Grand Master of a theocratic regime ruling the galaxy, Palpatine is the last of the Jedi, and Anakin and Kitster start the Revolution. This one is entirely the fault of [personal profile] leia_naberrie (who, by the way, needs to come back. Leia, we miss you!)
  • The answer to one of [profile] jedi_em's challenges, using the line "There is a way to be good again" from The Kite Runner. All I'm saying is that it will involve Palpatine, Jar Jar Binks, and the Skywalker twins. :)
  • How Luke met Tamrin (his future wife in my EU-free universe). In Dex's Diner. :D
  • Future!fic (i.e., after the war) in which Zuko decides that this whole Fire Lord thing isn't really working out, and he'd much rather be serving tea. Mai thinks that would be much less boring than palace life, anyway. And the Fire Nation has a democratic revolution.
Original stories
  • Five Weeks with Alyosha Karamazov [This title just popped into my head one day and it will not leave me alone. I think that this story would be about a young woman whose grandfather is dying. He asks her to read The Brothers Karamazov to him during her hospital visits.]
  • Something that I'm calling "scifi Beowulf," though that isn't quite accurate. [There is a wall around the city. The humans are inside, the monsters without. Or is it the other way around?]
