fialleril: [Palo is everyone's favorite artist] (Palo)
Mostly thoughts on BBC's The Hollow Crown as it's aired so far (so Richard II and Henry IV Parts 1 and 2), but also a Hamlet fic rec.

spoilers for The Hollow Crown, though mostly minor ones )

On a non-spoilery note, here is a fic you should read immediately, if you have not already done so!

Rosemary for Remembrance by Gehayi. It's Hamlet! In space! With Ophelia as the protagonist and an asexual woman of color, solving mysteries and saving the day (in space)! And female!Claudius, and secret plots, and aliens, and people saving the day by being clever. It is one of my favorite pieces of fiction, period.
fialleril: [the fires and the black river of loss whose other side is salvation] (emphasis on the super)
Hey there folks! I'm back in Albany, after some borderline epic adventures. I've been keeping a low profile lately because my brother gave me a cold for Christmas (the gift that keeps on giving!), but I'm starting to feel a little better now, so hopefully I'll be recovered in time to meet [ profile] frostbit_sky after New Year's.

You may perhaps be wondering why I'm referencing TV Tropes in my post title. Or perhaps you are simply grateful I didn't link to the zombie encyclopedia. Well. Sorry about that.

But actually no. Here's what happened. I got back to the Albany airport on Tuesday morning to find my car buried in a 2-3 foot drift of snow. And I did not have a shovel. So I dug myself out using only my feet and my ~*bare hands*~. And oh yes, did I ever regret it in the morning. Still am, as a matter of fact. But you've got to admit, it was pretty badass.

And then I immediately went out and bought a snow shovel. MOTHER NATURE, WHEN NEXT WE MEET, I WILL BE READY!

Speaking of badasses, this fic from Yuletide? Smell Like a Yeti (or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Old Spice)? It is amazing.
fialleril: [a bit like The Idiot, only written by someone much less talented than Dostoevsky] (Jar Jar Binks)
I have finally convinced the awesome [ profile] veriond to write a fanfic, and then to post it. And it is awesome!

It concerns Boss Nass and is a post-colonial look at Gungan culture and life in the aftermath of TPM.

HERE IS A LINK. Go forth and read!
fialleril: [there is a universe of questions] (stars - Spock)
1. Happy Hanukkah to those celebrating tonight!

2. Huge thanks to [ profile] lumy12 and [ profile] haydens_angel81 for the holiday cards! They're adorning our dining room table now.

3. So, uh...did anyone read the fic commentary I posted for "Clone Wars GI"? I'm not looking for comments or anything, but I'm just curious about whether it was read!

4. Apparently they are making a movie of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Natalie Portman is starring and producing. This...could be really interesting. For a given value of interesting.

5. Here is a fic about T'Pring being fierce and awesome. The world would be a better place if there were more like it!
fialleril: [tending as all music does, toward silence] (Spock)
It is called A Compass Wouldn't Help At All and it is a fic by [ profile] rawles concerning Star Trek and alternate realities being...truly alternate? Also, it is really good. And you should all read it.

That concludes this terribly articulate post.
fialleril: [the fires and the black river of loss whose other side is salvation] (pon farr)
For those of you on my f-list who haven't already seen this announcement on [ profile] rawles' journal, I direct your attention to this fic, which urgently needs to be read by everyone.

Title: Four Consequences of the Unexpected and Unlikely Friendship Between James T. Kirk and Nyota Uhura

It is here. Go read it now.

That is all. Carry on.
fialleril: [the fires and the black river of loss whose other side is salvation] (Spock/Uhura)
It seems I'm going to be seeing Angels and Demons tonight. I can't say I have any interest at all in the movie, really, but a group of really awesome people are going, and so I'm going with. I might let y'all know how awful it is. ;)

And while I'm here, please have some new!Trek genfic recs!

Title: The Unveiled Secret
Author: Laura JV
Rating: Upset Vulcans
Main characters: Sarek, Spock Prime
Summary: "What was silent in the father speaks in the son, and often I found in the son the unveiled secret of the father."
Link: The Unveiled Secret

Title: The Word for World Is --
Author: Laura JV
Rating: Baffling Vulcans
Main characters: Kirk, Spock, Uhura, some extremely baffling Vulcans
Summary: Vulcans do not grieve as humans would. Nor do they rebuild as humans would.
Link: The Word for World Is --

They're both over on Dreamwidth, which I'm not a member of. But these are very much worth reading. Very evocative, and the author really expresses the alien otherness of the Vulcans well.
fialleril: [a bit like The Idiot, only written by someone much less talented than Dostoevsky] (Jar Jar Binks)
Guys, I am upset and annoyed about the portrayal of so-called "pacifists" in the latest Clone Wars episode, and I will probably make a post ranting about it soon. BUT. [ profile] polly_moopers is a mind reader, and she just wrote me the most amazing fic.

About Jar Jar leading a non-violent revolution.

Taking a short break from writing my religion and politics paper to recommend [ profile] veriond's excellent original fic to you.

Title: Camellia and the Sand Penguin
Rating: G? possibly PG for mention of characters being eaten in a very lighthearted manner

Word Count: 1327
Warnings: Extreme verbosity, dry humor, and the occasional prissy academic voice.

Check it out here!

fialleril: [a hug means it's love] (Mai and Zuko)
Happy birthday to [ profile] emmaorgana! I hope you had a wonderful day, dear! :)

And I couldn't resist making you some Jocasta icons.

(For anyone else who's curious, [ profile] emmaorgana wrote pretty much the greatest Jocasta fic ever for the first [ profile] neu_beginning prompt. You can read it here.)
fialleril: [will you bear this storm?] (Shmi)
Because there is not enough Tatooine fic in the world, and because this fic is just great on characterization in general, you should all read this. ;)

Characters: wee!Anakin, Shmi
Prompt: [ profile] fanfic50's #35 - Trap
Word Count: 269

The beast was huge. About thirty meters long, and still growing at that. But young Anakin did not know this. He just knew it was the largest creature he’d ever seen in his life.

As some of you know, Owen/Beru is my OTP to end all OTPs. This fic is exactly why.

Title: Last Stand at the Lars Homestead
Auhtor: [ profile] sunnyskywalker
Fandom: Star Wars
Characters: Beru, Owen
Categories: Gen, PG
Word Count: 1906
Summary: When Luke doesn't show up to work on the South Ridge, Beru and Owen worry something horrible has happened - and that's before the Empire shows up.

She looked at Owen. He smiled, one of the rare smiles he saved just for her. There were so many things to say - but in truth, there was no need to say them.
fialleril: [the fires and the black river of loss whose other side is salvation] (Fema Baab)
This fills my Dooku and Anakin loving heart with glee. :D

So Persephone_Kore and Dreagoddess are writing a Dooku-trains-Anakin-as-a-Jedi fic, which I've been hoping someone would do forever. They only have it up on TF.N, though. But still. It is glorious.

Go see for yourselves here.
fialleril: [my eyes are yours; they are not blue, but they're wide open] (martyr Kitster)
Guys. [ profile] leia_naberrie wrote me a couple of birthday ficlets. About Kitster and Anakin. Grown up and being BFFs. And Kitster being a galactically renowned heart-throb actor. And they are AMAZING.

That is all.

For anybody else who thinks the fandom world needs more color, check out this community: [ profile] fanficofcolor. Wouldn't it be great to see some Star Wars stuff there?

Some of you know that I have developed a certain fondness for Nute Gunray, and there are a distressing lack of fics about him that treat him as a three-dimensional, sympathetic character. This fic, though, is the exception.

Title: Gunray's Redemption
Author: [ profile] 4thofeleven
Fandom: Star Wars
Categories: Gen, PG, Semi-AU
Disclaimer: Star Wars and all characters, locations, ect. remain the property of George Lucas. No copyright infringment is intended.
Summary: Five years after Revenge of the Sith, Nute Gunray tries to make a difference for the better.

He had tried to save the galaxy, and perhaps he had been the cause of many of its ills, but he had always done what he thought was right.
fialleril: [the fires and the black river of loss whose other side is salvation] (wisdom & strength)
Fic rec for all SW fans! I recently had the privilege of betaing a story for [ profile] sunnyskywalker, and I'd recommend it very highly, both for the subject matter treated and especially for the very interesting POV and writing style used. Check it out!

Title: Indebted
Fandom: Star Wars
Categories: Gen, PG
Word Count: 1267
Disclaimer: All characters, settings, etc. of Star Wars canon belong to Lucas and affiliated companies.
Summary: Chewbacca has plenty of trouble already, being broke and on the run after escaping Imperial slavery. Then he runs into the last person in the galaxy he wants to see: the human who freed him.

It wasn't fair. He'd almost been free.

Well, I've just gotten back from my GRE. I got a 650 on the verbal section and a 540 on the math, each out of 800. Blech. I expected the math score would be about like that. :P But I'm a bit disappointed in the verbal... *sighs* Oh well. It's good enough to get into grad school, so I guess I won't worry about it.

On a completely different note, here's the pics from the retreat that I promised!

And on another, even more different note: For anyone who likes both Star Wars and V for Vendetta, you absolutely must read this fanfic! One of the best fanfics I've ever stumbled across...
V for Vader
