Happy March 25!

fialleril: [I am glad that you are here with me] (here at the end of all things)
Well hello there internet. Very long time no see! Um. Sorry about that?

See, I have been trying to think of a non-awkward way to come back for a while, but finally I just decided there's nothing for it, and so! It is still March 25 over here (although just barely), and this is a FRODO BAGGINS APPRECIATION POST.

'Well, this is the end, Sam Gamgee,' said a voice by his side. And there was Frodo, pale and worn, and yet himself again; and in his eyes there was peace now, neither strain of will, nor madness, nor any fear. His burden was taken away. There was the dear master of the sweet days in the Shire.

'Master!' cried Sam, and fell upon his knees. In all that ruin of the world for the moment he felt only joy. The burden was gone. His master had been saved; he was himself again, he was free. And then Sam caught sight of the maimed and bleeding hand.

'Your poor hand!' he said. 'And I have nothing to bind it with, or comfort it. I would have spared him a whole hand of mine rather. But he's gone now beyond recall, gone for ever.'

'Yes,' said Frodo. 'But do you remember Gandalf's words: Even Gollum may have something yet to do? But for him, Sam, I could not have destroyed the Ring. The Quest would have been in vain, even at the bitter end. So let us forgive him! For the Quest is achieved, and now all is over. I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam.'

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] elle_white, because it's about time I do something not Loki-related on this journal I guess.

Give me a top 5 (any top 5) and I will comment with my top 5 with reasons.
fialleril: [I can ride and wield a blade, and I do not fear either pain or death.] (Eowyn)
Aragorn: Your duty is with your people.

Éowyn: Too often have I heard of duty. But am I not of the House of Eorl, a shieldmaiden and not a dry-nurse? I have waited on faltering feet long enough. Since they falter no longer, it seems, may I not now spend my life as I will?

Aragorn: Few may do that with honour. But as for you, lady: did you not accept the charge to govern the people until their lord's return? If you had not been chosen, then some marshal or captain would have been set in the same place, and he could not ride away from his charge, were he weary of it or no.

Éowyn: Shall I always be chosen? Shall I always be left behind when the Riders depart, to mind the house while they win renown, and find food and beds when they return?

Aragorn: A time may come soon when none will return. Then there will be need of valour without renown, for none shall remember the deeds that are done in the last defence of your homes. Yet the deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised.

Éowyn: All your words are but to say: you are a woman, and your part is in the house. But when the men have died in battle and honour, you have leave to be burned in the house, for the men will need it no more. But I am of the House of Eorl and not a serving-woman. I can ride and wield a blade, and I do not fear either pain or death.

Aragorn, you just been told.
fialleril: [I am glad that you are here with me] (here at the end of all things)
No promises that I'll actually finish all the drabbles though. I am the worst sometimes.

Pick a letter and a corresponding word, then name a character, a set of characters, or a pairing. In exchange, I'll write you at least one hundred (100) words of fic! If someone's already claimed a letter, then please pick another.

born of hope

fialleril: [I am glad that you are here with me] (here at the end of all things)
This is perhaps the best fanvid I've ever seen.

It's basically an hour-long production about Aragorn's parents, with insanely high production quality for a fanvid, and some pretty clever imagining of a storyline that Tolkien hardly fleshed out. (Although there are also some noticeable similarities to events in LOTR proper. But that's to be expected, I think. And even those are different enough that they're not distracting.)

Plus, there's Elladan and Elrohir! And a mini!Halbarad! And awesome rangers.

I think what impressed me the most about this vid is that it had enough substance in and of itself, and it was well done enough, that I could actually imagine it gaining a fandom of its own.

It's called Born of Hope. Check it out.
fialleril: [with the price of the Shire under his jacket] (Ring-bearer)
Today I was skimming through my fanfic writing file and, because I'm reading LOTR again, out of curiosity I decided to poke about in that section of my file. It had clearly not been poked about in for some time! Thankfully I find most of the fics I actually finished and published at least tolerable even now, but my notes and my partly finished fics from my LOTR days? Oh goodness no!

They are so bad, you guys. So horribly bad! And I don't even mean the writing style. I used to fancy I was pretty good at imitating Tolkien's style, and reading over these...I still think I was. That's not the issue.

No, it's the smarminess. Ugh, was I ever so quaint and full of pat answers and tripe? Sadly, yes. The written evidence is there!

Fortunately (or...unfortunately?) for you, all that unpublished crap will never see the light of day.

Possibly I will try my hand at some decent LOTR fic? You never know.
fialleril: [o pray for the wanderer, pray for me] (Our Lady of Mordor)
I'm currently rereading The Lord of the Rings and have rekindled my epic love for Frodo Baggins and Galadriel. Possibly there will be a further meta-post soon! In the meantime, I seem to have committed icons.

Also there are some Trek icons. It happens.

fialleril: [the fires and the black river of loss whose other side is salvation] (Alyosha)
Snagged this from [livejournal.com profile] lexy_opal. I've done a similar one for pairings, but this one seems more fun. ;)

List 15 of your favorite characters from different fandoms, and ask people to spot patterns in your choices, and if they're so inclined, to draw conclusions about you based on the patterns they've spotted.

1. Alexei Fyodorovich Karamazov [The Brothers Karmazov] | Shut up. It's a fandom if I say it is.
2. Frodo Baggins [The Lord of the Rings]
3. Luke Skywalker [Star Wars Original Trilogy]
4. Shmi Skywalker [Star Wars Prequel Trilogy]
5. Aang and Mai [Avatar: The Last Airbender] | I really can't decide between them, so they're both here.
6. Ba'el [Star Trek: The Next Generation] | Though if I had to pick a series regular, it would be Worf.
7. Evey Hammond [V for Vendetta]
8. Lúthien Tinúviel [The Silmarillion]
9. Nyota Uhura and T'Pring [Star Trek: The Original Series] | No, seriously. I can only conclude that so many people hate T'Pring because they're jealous of her flawless logic. And her awesome.
10. Edmund Pevensie [The Chronicles of Narnia]
11. Persephone [Greek Mythology] | Totally a fandom. It has a section on FFN and everything.
12. Nightcrawler [X-Men movieverse]
13. Cham Syndulla [Star Wars: The Clone Wars]
14. Paikea [Whale Rider]
15. Kiowa [The Things They Carried]

There's no Star Trek XI character here because I am completely incapable of narrowing it down to even two. It's a seven-way tie between Chekov, Gaila, McCoy, Sarek, Spock, Sulu, and Uhura. (And see, I have even alphabetized them because I couldn't decide what order to write them in!)

I'm back from the renaissance festival, and I bring pictures!

Things turned out to be even more geekily fun than I was expecting, and I ended up having a blast despite the fact that I went by myself. I met a lot of interesting people, and am now cursing the fact that I lived in Atlanta for two years and blew both of my chances to go to Dragon Con.

Also I...may have bought some Vulcan ears. And there may be pictorial evidence. Oh dear, oh dear.

Here there be photos )

OTP meme, for the lulz

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 10:47 pm
fialleril: [the fires and the black river of loss whose other side is salvation] (Spockblocked)
Yeah, I still don't have the meta done. It's...proving harder to write than I expected. But it will be written. At this point it almost feels like I need to write it.

Anyway, I thought I'd do that one OTP meme that's been going around, mostly because I'm in a weird mood and thought it would be hilarious. We'll see if I can even manage to find 10 OTPs.

It's maybe worth pointing out that I have a pretty strict definition of OTP: it means both that I can't imagine the two people with anyone but each other, and also that I have some interest in their relationship. (So, for example, I can't really imagine Aang ever loving anyone but Katara, but I also am not terribly interested in their relationship. It's just something that's there for me, so I wouldn't call them an OTP.)

Name your 10 absolutely favorite couples (het/slash/canon/fanon) and ask people to see what trends they notice about your couples. Try to pick different fandoms:

01. Owen/Beru, Star Wars
02. Bail/Breha, Star Wars
03. Mai/Zuko, Avatar: The Last Airbender
04. Spock/Uhura, Star Trek XI (Only XI, though. I honestly can't imagine TOS Spock with anyone.)
05. Azula/Ty Lee, Avatar: The Last Airbender (Well, okay, I can imagine Ty Lee with other people, but Azula's the one she always comes back to.)
06. Galadriel/Celeborn, The Silmarillion / The Lord of the Rings
07. Anabasis Anakin/Padmé, my Star Wars fanfic, LOL (They're only OTP for Anabasis, though. In canon and in other AUs, not necessarily, but Anabasis Anakin and Padmé survived the storm together.)
08. Obi-Wan/Jedi Code, Star Wars (It's canon, kids.)
09. Uh... Hermes/your mom, Greek mythology (Yeah, we're really scraping the bottom of the barrel now...)
10. Sly Moore/Taun We, Star Wars (Because...why not?)

So, you guys remember that shipping meme that was going around? I decided to do it for the lulz. But because I'm trying to keep it a light experience for myself, certain questions have been summarily dismissed to prevent this turning into a rant post. I'm sure you can guess which ones. Was surfing ff.net—clearly a perilous thing to do. And I found one that is definitely deserving of [profile] rabidfangurl 's Summary Executions. It's so...unique that I figured I'd better post it here.

During the Clone Wars, ObiWan Kenobi crashes his fighter and is stranded on an unknown Outer Rim planet called Arda. There he finds the one thing Jedi are forbidden to have: love. LotR crossover, ObiWanAragorn, SLASH, MPREG

I think the crazy speaks for itself...
fialleril: [determined to save the only life you could save] (balance)
Favourite story of 2006: This one's a tie. Devotio Sacer wins for being what I consider my personal best. Anabasis wins for being the most enjoyable to write and to discuss with others.

Best story I wrote, 2006: Devotio Sacer, no contest.

Most Underappreciated Story I wrote in 2006: Full of Grace. Evidently, people aren't that interested in the prospect of redeeming Palpatine. Or they're angry that I crispy fried Anakin all over again. One of the two. ;)

Most Fun Story: Anabasis again. Interesting combinations of characters are always the most fun to write.

Sexiest Story: Erm... I don't think I've ever written something that could qualify as sexy... So I guess I'll say Anabasis, since that's the only fic I've written that really even involves a romantic relationship. >_<

Holy Crap, that's wrong, even for you: Um, I don't really think it's wrong, but probably the closest is Only Love. It's a story about torture, and my first foray into some darker themes I'd like to explore more.

Story that shifted my perceptions of a character: Horse with No Name made me see Obi-Wan as a tragic character, but not for the usual reasons. Writing this made me realize how easy and understandable self-delusion is.

Hardest Story to Do: If this means a story the writing of which was almost physically painful, then Only Love definitely takes the cake. I forced myself to go darker than I had before, not to mention write something that reflects my own fear of needles. ;) For simply being difficult to write, Anabasis wins. It's the longest fic I've attempted to date, and I've been working on the next chapter for months. Literally.

Biggest Disappointment: Grains of Wheat. Evidently, no one likes my poetry. ;)

Most Revealing Story: Fragments of Elegy. There's something very raw about getting so deeply into a character's head. It leaves you vulnerable. Leia and I have a lot in common, that way.

Story I Want Remembered: Devotio Sacer and Fragments of Elegy.

Fic I Still Love Most From 2005: To Water the Dust. Hobbits + the Vala Ulmo = goodness. :)
fialleril: [the fires and the black river of loss whose other side is salvation] (the space between)
writer's meme snagged from [livejournal.com profile] charmisjess

WRITER'S MEME: Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of the top five favorite fics you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

Devotio Sacer
A fic based on the meaning of Latin words. That alone would earn it a place on this list. Add to that the fact that it comes probably the closest of anything I've ever written to expressing some of the things I hold most true and vital in the universe. Sacrifice, internal struggle, redemption, rebirth, the nature of time and eternity... This fic expresses things in story format I could never find the words to simply say. It's one of those things where the story means much more than the explanation of it. As it always does, I think. To sum it all up, this is one of those fics I can truly say just came to me, and I don't know if I can claim it as my own. It was more like I chanelled it. And it's one of those fics I actually enjoy going back and rereading. I even discover something new every time. So, yeah, pretty much the best thing I've ever written. :)

Fragments of Elegy
Probably the first fic I wrote where I really feel like I got inside the character's head. I used to think I couldn't write first person. This one proved me wrong. Also, looking back, I realize this fic was pretty personal (even though none of the details in it reflect on my life in any way), and it was definitely something I needed to write. It still means a lot to me.

The Home-coming of Frodo and Samwise
The first fanfic I ever started writing (though not the first I finished). I spent over a year on it, and I'm still immensely proud of the way in which I captured Tolkien's style of writing.

Only Love
A dark, spiritual, psychological piece that focuses on torture, horror, and what it really means to forgive. I wanted to put a nameless character in the most extreme, horrific, unforgivable situation, and from there, reflect on the nature of love. I'm not sure I succeeded completely, but in the end, the outcome surprised even me, and in a good way. I also enjoyed playing with the feeling of time and the nature of eternity. Definitely one of my favorites of my own fics.

My first attempt at a long multi-chapter story. And, of course, fun with AU. I love this fic. In my own opinion, it gets better all the time, and it keeps veering in unexpected new directions. The best part about writing such a divergent AU? The character combinations. Vader and his agent Sabé. Jedi Master Dooku teaming up with Senator Amidala and Chancellor Organa to get Anakin out of prison. Kitster Banai the holo and stage actor and the Artists United for Freedom, headed by Kitster and Palo Gvanish, Padmé's long lost childhood sweetheart. And especially the growing understanding and friendship between Master Dooku and the former Darth Vader. And yes, for the curious, I am still working on this fic, and hopefully will be posting a new chapter very soon.

I tag [livejournal.com profile] leia_naberrie, [livejournal.com profile] haydens_angel81, [livejournal.com profile] rabidfangurl, [livejournal.com profile] daisy_dreamer and anyone else who writes fic.
