fialleril: [my favorite shapeshifting genderqueer trickster] (Loki)
Loki is the Snape to Balder's Dumbledore.

Think about it. Everybody knows Ragnarok is coming, and when it comes, all of the elder generation of male gods are going to die. The only ones who survive Ragnarok are a) exiles (Hoenir), b) children (Magni, Modi, Vidar), or c) already dead (Balder, Hodur).

So Balder dies well before Ragnarok, misses out on the battle and blood and death and all-consuming fire, and comes back to life just in time to find the world reborn, a blank slate just waiting to be ordered afresh, and himself the heir apparent of the gods, with basically no one to challenge him for the status of chief god.

And he'd be a good ruler, too. Unlike Odin, he's renowned for his justice and fairness as well as his wisdom. If Loki is the sort of trickster who wants to balance the scales by burning everything to the ground and starting over, Balder is definitely the guy to start over with. But in order to ensure he'll be around to start everything over, he has to die first. Loki is both the person who ensures that Balder dies, and the person who ensures that he stays dead - that is, stays in Hel, where he is safe from Ragnarok and in place to take the field once the world is reborn.

Surely someone has written this, internet? Don't tell me I'm going to have to write it myself!

An Apple for a Mother

Holy wow, you guys, I have never inspired art before. Askdjlakjdkap I am just going to sit here and key smash for a while because this is literally perfection.

Uuuuggggh, my life's work is complete, LET ME DIE, etc.

(I seriously need to join tumblr so I can post these things in an appropriate setting but whatever whatever I'll get to it.)
fialleril: [By virtue of all I have done, may the pain of every living creature be completely cleared away.] (Aang)
So as everybody has probably heard by now, that rumor about an ATLA sequel is true! The Legend of Korra is set to air in 2011:

The "Legend of Korra" is from the creator-producers of "Avatar: The Last Airbender."

Nickelodeon executive Brown Johnson says the new series will focus on a teenage girl avatar named Korra. Brown describes her as hotheaded, independent and "ready to take on the world."

Also, behold, an image!

A couple things of note:

1. Korra looks awesome. :D Also, a good bit older than Aang was in his show, which could be an interesting twist.

2. Look at the buildings! This is the Avatar world ~*IN THE FUTURE*~! OMG, future shenanigans! Mike and Bryan have stumbled upon one of my favorite tropes ever.

I have hopes that there will be, at some point, a lolarious back story a la Roku and Sozin in which we find out some things about the future lives of the heroes from Aang's story. Also, Aang will be Korra's Roku, which is awesome! Also, (hopefully) a new generation of airbenders!

I am pretty excited about this!

ETA: Also, as I have now heard that this show is set 70 years after Aang's show, here are some further thoughts.

I think it's incredibly sad that Aang apparently dies so young. BUT I also think it's pretty realistic. I can see it happening. And I have faith that Mike and Bryan will pull it off well.

And here is what I really want to see. MAI AND ZUKO AS CROTCHETY OLD PEOPLE IN LOVE. I tell you that crotchety old people in love is perhaps my NUMBER ONE OTP FORMULA OF ALL TIME. Now you know the real reason behind my OTPing of Owen/Beru.

And can't you just see Mai and Zuko, old but still ridiculously badass (especially Mai), surrounded by their ridiculously adorable grandchildren, who insist on cramping their badass style by looking adorable? YES. THIS IS ALL I WANT OUT OF MY TV, APPARENTLY.

ETA the second: Here is a better summary!

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern "Avatar" world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

I'm back from the renaissance festival, and I bring pictures!

Things turned out to be even more geekily fun than I was expecting, and I ended up having a blast despite the fact that I went by myself. I met a lot of interesting people, and am now cursing the fact that I lived in Atlanta for two years and blew both of my chances to go to Dragon Con.

Also I...may have bought some Vulcan ears. And there may be pictorial evidence. Oh dear, oh dear.

Modivation to watch star trek
by *Vinty on deviantART

Pavel Chekov. Saving the universe through utter adorableness.

In other, related, news: this is a sad state of affairs, my friends. I stayed up til ungodly hours reading Star Trek fic last night.

And, in a bout of crack inspiration that now WILL NOT leave me alone, I suddenly realized that there are a remarkable number of similarities between Spock/Uhura and Anabasis Anakin/Padmé.

Now wait a minute, you're thinking. Spock is a normally peaceful Vulcan, and Anabasis Anakin is someone who's been systematically desensitized to violence and trained as a mass murderer. Where's the comparison?

But consider this: They are both extremely good at repressing their emotions and being nearly impossible for other people to read, and the only times they ever really come close to being free with their emotions is when they're with Uhura and Padmé, respectively. Also, this new movie Spock apparently has a thing for strangling people when he gets pissed. I don't think I even need to tell you how that relates. this idea will not get out of my head! It's crazy, I tell you!

P.S. I think I may have committed the cardinal sin of fandom simply by using the Star Trek and Star Wars tags on the same post. The world may very well implode. Brace yourselves.

After the epic fail contained in my last post, here is some epic win that's cheered me up. :) I got two awesome things in the mail today: an early birthday card from my grandma and a lovely little package from [ profile] albumsontheside. Thank you darling! :D

Said package contained my very own Anakin Skywalker. Actually, according to the little "collect them all!" card that came with the Ventress [ profile] emmaorgana sent me, this particular Anakin is really Darth Vader. (My OT loving soul finds this somewhat difficult to believe, since Darth Vader has a pretty badass life support system and sounds like James Earl Jones, but I digress. Suffice it to say that Emma and Samira both clearly know me too well.)

My Darth Vader came with a full FIVE PAGES of meticulously copied care instructions. :D Said instructions detailed, among other things, the fact that Anakin most certainly does not suffer from mental illness of any kind, and he is perfectly fine really. Also, he apparently has a number of scars that are frighteningly similar to Anabasis!Anakin's scars, and make me wonder if [ profile] albumsontheside has been sneaking peeks at my notes again. ;)

Speaking of which, this kid could practically be Anabasis!Anakin: he just needs to lose the scar over his eye and the mechanical hand, get a haircut, and acquire some better fashion sense! (Also, a red lightsaber.)

I feel that it is patently dangerous to have Anakin and Ventress together in the same house, let alone the same room (especially since said Anakin reminds me so much of his Anabasis incarnation), but for now they appear to have called a truce in favor of threatening me to make me write more fic. Anakin is demanding he get a happy story, for once. (Actually, I tell a lie. He's Anabasis!Anakin, and what he really wants is to kill Obi-Wan, but I'm not going to let him.)

And yes, I am completely aware of the irony of the fact that Anakin and Ventress are standing on either side of an icon of Lady Wisdom and her daughters Faith, Hope, and Love.

So, y'all remember that part in TPM when Qui-Gon walks into Watto's junk shop, and finds out that Watto doesn't take Republic credits, and then completely fails to ask where the local money-changer can be found, despite the fact that he's in a large spaceport? Yeah, that part. Okay, here's a story.

Qui-Gon walks into the first junk shop he finds. He's not wild about being there, and you can tell by the look on his face. The shop owner comes flying up to him, chattering away in some language he can't understand. Qui-Gon gives a put-upon sigh.

"Hello," he says, slowly and loudly. "Does anyone here speak English?"

"Oh, American, eh?" Watto says. "Well, waddaya need?"

Qui-Gon tells him, and they go out back. Watto has the part, but Qui-Gon is dismayed to find that he doesn't take American Express. He doesn't take travelers checks, either. Barbarian. Qui-Gon doesn't have any pesos, so he leaves the shop. Apparently it never occurred to him to ask where he could find an ATM.

After he's gone, Watto mutters a disgusted, "Gringos" under his breath. Anakin shrugs and says, "I dunno, I thought the girl was pretty cute."

Later Anakin offers to let Qui-Gon's party stay at his house, mostly because the girl is pretty cute. Shmi begs Qui-Gon to take Anakin back to America with him and give him a better life. (She knows that she could just tell Qui-Gon about the ATM, but if he's not smart enough to ask, she's not going to miss this opportunity.)

So Anakin goes to America. He thought he was going to have a really swank life, but instead he ends up...well, in the military. And he doesn't even get to send any money home to Mom.

Yeah. You guys, Qui-Gon is such an American tourist.

No offense is meant to anyone with this post. It just suddenly struck me how well these scenes fit the stereotypes, and I had to share.

I'm finally back in the land of the living, but it was a near thing for a while. I managed to come down with a flue during dead week and finals week, the same time when everything was due. But I turned in my last final on Tuesday (German translation - UGH!), had the AAR holiday party that afternoon, and then hopped a plane to Springfield on Wednesday. So now I'm writing this from my sister's dorm room computer. We're headed home tomorrow.

But I'm sure no one is interested in any of that, so let's talk fandom things! On Wednesday night [ profile] veriond and I finally got caught up on the Clone Wars episodes.

A little late for International Blog Against Racism Week, unfortunately...

As many of you know I don't really follow the EU (although I used to, but that's another story), but I lurk enough around the fandom and on Wookieepedia to notice a few things. And lately, something's been bothering me. Namely, the EU treatment of movie!canon characters of color.

There aren't many people of color in the Star Wars universe to begin with (and that's another meta entirely!). But I've started to notice a pattern in how the EU treats them.

Please note: for this meta, I will be dealing specifically with non-Jedi canon Star Wars characters of color. Perhaps some day I'll write a different meta about the Jedi...

continued beneath the cut, with picspam! )

EDITED to add Sei Taria.
EDITED again to add Queens Jamillia and Apailana, handmaiden Rabé, and Senator Bana Breemu.

P.S. Feel free to remind me of any other non-Jedi movie!canon characters I may have overlooked! And emphasis on the non-Jedi and movie canon characters. I stated at the beginning that this meta was about EU treatment of characters from the movies who are not Jedi, but after reading the comments, apparently a lot of people missed that memo...

After watching the floor exercise prelims in men's gymnastics, I have reached these conclusions:

- Men in toe shoes are awesome.

- Germany's Fabian Hambuechen is similarly awesome.

- It's truly amazing what these athletes can do. I don't think I've ever said "Wow" quite so often in such a short time span.

- A breakdancing competition between gymnasts would be EPIC.

I also reached a few rather geekier conclusions, of an Avatar/Olympics crossover persuasion.

- Clearly, all firebenders are also trained gymnasts.

- Prince "I'm A Failpot At Nearly Everything" Zuko is secretly a master of floor exercises. And I have proof. Compare:

I'm a little depressed by the fact that no one seems to want to read my latest fic, so I decided to cheer myself up by posting the last of my Disney World pictures.

We'll start with the Star Wars parade and the Jedi Training Academy pics. (Please note: a lot of these pics are better if you view them in full size!)

painted faces on parade )

And now for what I know you've all really been waiting for: the pics from Snigg and Oopla's Hyperspace Hoopla! But first, if you haven't seen the video on YouTube yet, go do so. Unfortunately, the YouTube video is only of the dance off part of the show, but it is definitely worth watching.

Here's this year's:

And, for those who are interested, I also hunted down last year's. (It seems that last year was the first year for the dance off.)

And now, on to the pictures )

I just dropped [ profile] veriond off at the airport, and now she's headed back home. I'm going to miss having her around. We have over two weeks of vacation together, so now it almost feels weird with her not being here. But we had a lot of fun together, and spent the last couple of days just hanging out, which is why I haven't posted. :)

Now, though, it's time for the first Hollywood Studios Disney post. I have so many pics from Star Wars Weekend that I decided to break them up into two posts. This post contains all of the pictures we took with the Star Wars characters in the park, pictures from the sneak-peek of the upcoming Clone Wars film, and some of the non-Star Wars related stuff we did at Hollywood Studios. The next post will have pics from the Star Wars parade and the Hyperspace Hoopla (aka the dance-off).

it is your destiny )
